The Lag #8: Sea of Thieves

Welcome to The Lag, the podcast from New Game+ where we focus on the games too old to be new and too new to be retro.

Just as New Game+ promotes the belief that valuable discussion of games never expires, The Lag aims to carry that spirit by focusing on the old ones as much as the new ones. Alex Dewing and Olly Smith, the editors of New Game+ will act as your guides through The Lag, stopping to look at everything from RPGs to graphic adventure games.

Yo ho, yo ho, it’s a pirate life for we! We here at New Game+, that is, where this month we sail The Lag into Sea of Thieves. This hilariously fun free-form game sees you jumping aboard a ship to become captain and crew whether you’re playing the Tall Tales campaign missions or simply plundering with friends. With serious attention to detail, you can do everything from navigating the oceans to looting rival ships, and all with a guitar in hand and a shanty to sing.

With Alex locked in the brig this month, Olly takes over hosting duties with TechRadar writer, PAL Keys podcaster, and freelancer Daryl Baxter. They chat Daryl’s history with games, the thrill of the open seas multiplayer, and why you’re more than likely to spot Daryl flying through the sky E.T. style while aboard. As with all episodes of The Lag, be warned for spoilers throughout.

The Lag will be back next month with a spooky game that precedes a sequel featuring a woman of great stature. If you have any suggestions for what you’d like to see us play, get in touch or leave a reply.

As with all our episodes, you can listen and subscribe on Spotify, Anchor, Google Podcasts, and iTunes. So sit down, grab your consoles, and get ready as we take you through The Lag.
